In 1925, the New South Wales government scientist Arthur Penfold announced an important discovery. He had just completed a three-year period of systematic testing and had found a species of tea tree Melaleuca alternifoha whose antiseptic properties were thirteen times (13X or 130%) stronger than carbolic acid, the main antibacterial (antibiotic) weapon of the day. If you need a strong antibiotic, TEA Tree is your answer.

Even more remarkable, perhaps, is the fact that tea tree oil is only now being rediscovered for many years it has been neglected at the expense of inferior synthetic medicines that obviously produce more money, but unfortunately not better results.

It is shocking news to realize tea tree oil did fall into neglect for a number of years. The fact is it really happened because of the discovery of penicillin and the rise of antibiotics that tea tree oil was forgotten. Not that it didn't work very well, it could not be patented,  then controlled and sold exclusively by a drug company. You cannot patent mother nature, it's hers to give freely to all those who know how effective it really is.

Most people do know that there is many bacteria that have become immune to antibiotics. The marvels of modern medicine is they spend millions of dollars developing a specific drug to kill a certain bacteria and then the bacteria mutates and the drug is not longer effective. With essential oils, since they work on a different frequency than synthetic drugs the bacteria mutation does not affect the effectiveness of the essential oils. That's the magnificent wonder of nature. Pure TEA TREE essential oil is superior to synthetic antibiotic drugs.

The United States government has now approved the use of tea tree oil in cosmetics. The oil can be used, for example, not only in its pure state, but also as a constituent in shampoos, soaps, antiseptic creams and even in anti-itch treatments for pets!

What is Tea Tree Oil?

TEA TREE OIL is the essence produced by distillation of the leaves of Melaleuca akernifolia, the medicinal tea tree.

The name 'tea tree' was first used by Captain Cook, whose sailors used the leaves of a species of Leptospermum as a substitute for tea. They found it 'spicy and refreshing'.

This tree grows naturally on the north coast of New South Wales, particularly in the Richmond River basin near Lismore.

The trees from the north have a high terpinen-4-ol content and a low cineole content.

The Australian standard number AS 2782-1985 for Oil of Melaleuca now requires that the terpinen-4-ol content of the oil should be greater than 30% and the cineole content less than 15%. More recently the Australian Tea Tree Industry Association Inc. (ATTIA) has offered certification for oil which authentically meets the standard and comes only from Melaleuca alternifolia It is important to buy only reputable brands to avoid unsatisfactory blends or even fraudulent concoctions which have been passed off as genuine tea tree oil.

Pure tea tree oil is colorless or sometimes pale yellow and has a pleasant characteristic smell. It is an extremely complex substance, containing at least 48 organic compounds. These consist mainly of terpinenes, cymones, pinenes, terpineols, cineol, sesquiterpenes and sesquiterpinene alcohols.

Tea tree oil was the first natural substance found to contain the organic compound viridiflorene. A detailed analysis of the oil by Sword and Hunter (1978) revealed four constituents which have rarely been found anywhere else in Nature: viridiflorene (present at 1%), p terpineol (0.24%), L-terpineol (trace) and allyhexanoate (trace).

It is interesting to note that none of these substances is especially effective alone. It seems that all the compounds work together in synergy to produce the maximum healing power. Recent studies undertaken by the Australian Tea

Tree Industry Association (ATTIA) have determined the LD. 50 or lethal dose in rats was 1.9-2.6 mI/kg.
