Public Citizen urges label warnings for all statins
WASHINGTON, Aug 20 (Reuters Health) - The Washington, DC-based consumer advocacy group Public Citizen has filed a petition with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) urging the agency to require stronger label warnings for all of the cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins. Public Citizen is seeking a black box warning, which is the strongest labeling caution that can be mandated by the FDA. Bayer recalled its statin drug Baycol (cerivastatin) on August 8, after more than 50 people died from rhabdomyolysis, a condition in which the skeletal muscle degenerates. According to Public Citizen, rhabdomyolysis has been linked to other statin drugs as well. When Bayer pulled Baycol, the FDA suggested that doctors switch their patients to other statins on the market, including: | Bristol-Myers Squibb's | Pravachol | (pravastatin) | | Pfizer's | Lipitor | (atorvastatin) | | Novartis' | Lescol | (fluvastatin) | | Merck's | Mevacor | (lovastatin) | | Merck's | Zocor | (simvastatin) |
Have you heard any warnings on your cholesterol lowering statin drugs? Money Talks and Safety Walks
