The Legendary History
In 1851, 500 Mormon settlers in 150 wagons arrived at the foot of the "arrow-marked mountain" seen in a vision of Brigham Young, and established the city of San Bernardino before continuing west to the Pacific. Some years later, David Noble Smith, a young pioneer in search of the perfect therapeutic waters around which to create his dream of a "hot springs infirmary," built the first known structures on the site and opened them to the public. Since that first sanitarium, three hotels with spas have been constructed at Arrowhead Springs over the years. Each reflected its era in style and function. The Original Arrowhead Springs Hygienic Infirmary built by David Nobile Smith who started using the natural hot mineral water to treat people with various illnesses inside his "treatment house." The original wooden buildings which made up his crude complex.
The Newer an Improved Arrowhead Springs Hygienic Infirmary
Guests in the 1800's and early 1900's enjoyed the "cienaga" mud baths and the hot spring mineral water.
The first Arrowhead Springs Hotel (below) was built by David Noble Smith 1868-1885. In 1883, Smith leased his hotel to Messrs. Darby and Lyman of Los Angeles. Darby and Lyman put a new roof on the two story structure and added an ornate veranda around the entire exterior. At this time, Darby and Lyman also removed the one story "Treatment House". Smith died March 17, 1885, the hotel burned down 3 days later on March 20, 1885. Darby and Lyman incorporated and formed the Arrowhead Hot Springs Company. In 1886 a second hotel was rebuilt for $150,000 (middle). Eventually a wing was added to each side, bringing the total number of rooms to 120. Arrowhead Springs Hotel became the largest hostelry in the San Bernardino area. But it only lasted until 1895 when it was destroyed by fire during a 4th of July celebration. The third Arrowhead Springs Hotel was built in 1905 (right). Bought by a Hollywood Consortium in 1930 and promoted as a luxury resort, the hotel soon became the hangout for big name celebrities like Loretta Young, Mary Pickford, Spencer Tracy and Humphrey Bogart. A forest fire destroyed it in November of 1938.
At a cost of $ 1.5 million, a new, luxurious, six-story 135-room Arrowhead Springs Hotel (left) opened in December of 1939. Judy Garland, Al Jolson, and Rudy Vallee were among those featured the all-star grand opening. During World War II was leased by the military and used as a naval hospital in 1944. Over 6,000 Navy battle casualties received treatment there over the next two years. The was purchased in 1962 for 1 million dollars by William “Bill” Bright, founder of Campus Crusade For Christ, which originated at UCLA. Arrowhead Springs was the international headquarters for the Christian organization. This went on for the next three decades until Bright decided to relocate to its main offices to Orlando, Florida in 1991. Campus Crusade continued to use the property as its conference center until 1999.
